This is a great instinct — commute time affects daily quality of life more than almost any other factor buyers overlook. But most portal searches only let you filter by straight-line distance, which is a poor stand-in for actual drive time. Here's how to search by commute time properly.

Why radius searches are misleading

A search filter set to "10 miles from work" measures distance as the crow flies — a straight line on a map. Actual drive time depends on the road network, not distance, and the two can diverge enormously:

• A home 8 miles away via a direct highway route might be a 15-minute drive.
• A home only 5 miles away, but separated by a river, a lack of direct roads, or heavy local traffic, could easily take 30 minutes or more.

If commute time is a real priority, a mileage radius on a portal search is often actively misleading you toward or away from the wrong homes.

Searching by drive time instead of distance

• Use a drive-time mapping tool: Several mapping and commute-planning tools let you draw an actual drive-time boundary (an "isochrone") around a work address, showing every area reachable within your target time.
• Account for rush hour vs. off-peak: A route that takes 15 minutes at 10am can easily take 35 minutes at 8am or 5pm. Always check drive time during the hours you'll actually be commuting, not the free-flow estimate.
• Consider public transit options: If transit is realistic for your commute, factor in walk time to a stop, wait time, and the transit trip itself — not just driving.
